Subject:

Addition of SSS to IST Program

Dear Sir:

]

Reference (d) requested Yankee's schedule with a completion-date to add j

all applicable components of the Safe Shutdown System (SSS) into the Yankee In-Service Testing (IST) Program. Reference (d) determined that.the SSS fell j

into the ASME,Section XI, requirements since it will be used to maintain safo shutdown conditions in the event of an earthquake.

Modifications required to seismically upgrade the_ plant are presently scheduled through the 1990 refueling outage..Also, Yankee is presently

)

required to update and revise the entire Section XI Program by the beginning j

of 1991 with the next program interval commencing on July 1, 1991. Therefore, concurrent with these schedules Yankee commits to incorporate the applicable components of the SSS into the IST Program as part of the program update for

{

the next program interval.

Also, testing of the SSS per IST requirements will commence during the 1990 refueling outage.

It should be noted that the operational readiness of the SSS is presently being verified by surveillance j

testing in accordance with plant procedures..

Please contact us with any questions on this information, j

Very truly yours, YANKEE ATOMIC ELECTRIC COMPANY 0711100071. Q h 9 l
