Pipe Monitor DESCRIPTION:

This transmission gauging device is used to determine the amount of coal present inside a steel tube. The source housing. consists of a 4.5 inches (114.3 mm)

O.D. by 4.75 inches (120. 65 mm) long 1/16 inch (1.59 mm) thick mild steel tube enclosing 1.9 inches (48.26 mm) minimum radial thickness of lead shielding.

A 0.44 inch (11.1 mm) 0.D.

by 4.54 inch (115.3 mm) long stainless steel source holder locates the source in the center of the lead shield and a 0.16 inch (4.06 mm) diameter collimator allows the emission of the useful beam. The outer steel tube is welded to a 1/4 inch (6.35 mm). steel plate.

The source housing is fastened to the frame support with two 1/2-inch (12.70 mm) diameter steel bolts passing through the steel plate.

A steel cap is welded.to the other end.of the outer steel tube to enclose the shield.

The source housing is designed to use either a 50 mci (1,85 GBq) or 200 mci (7.40 GBq) Cs-137 source (NER-570) manufactured by New England. Nuclear Corporation. The source housing is coated with rust-inhibiting semi-gloss enamel to prevent any corrosion

~

uof the shield.

The rotating steel shutter, 2.25 inches (57.15 mm) 0.D. by 2.81 inches (71.37 mm) long, has four positions, "OFF",

"ON",

and two calibrate positions.

After the source housing is installed and the rotating shutter is placed in the "ON" position, there are no moving parts during normal operation of the gauge.

~The approximate weight of the device is 15 kg (33.07 lbs).

LABELING:

This device is labeled in accordance with.10 CFR Part 20.

The label contains the. radiation symbol, name of distribi tor, isotope, activity, date of assay, model number, serial number, source housing ANSI classification, and the words " CAUTION: RADIOACTIVE

, MATERIALS" and "SEE OPERATING MANUAL'FOR SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS".

DEVICE TYPE:

Pipe Monitor CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

i The Model NCPM is designed for use as a nuclear coal pipe monitor to determine the amount of coal present inside a feed pipe.

The source housing should not be subjected to environmental conditions which exceed its ANSI N538-1978 performance classification.

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

A single prototype of the Model NCPM was tested by the New England Nuclear Corp.

The test data showed that the source housing qualified for an ANSI N538-1978 performance classification:

1.

ANSI-64-545-564-R2 with 50 mci (1.85 GBq) 2.

ANSI-64-435-454-R2 with 200 mci (7.40 GBq) i The prototype source housing was subjected to a high temperature test and drop test to simulate a fire and a subsequent detachment of the source housing from its frame support.

The outer container was damaged by the test, however, the source containment remained intact.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Radiation measurements of the source housing when loaded with 200 mci (7.40 GBq) of Cs-137 were reported as follows:

Isodistance Dose Rate Shutter Contour Position inch cm mR/hr pSv/hr 1.97 5

Prior to shipment each unit was subjected to and passed an acceptable series of tests and inspections conducted by New England Nuclear.

LIMITATIONS.AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • The device shall be used only by persons specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.
  • The device shall be leak tested at installation, at source replacement and at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination by persons specifically licensed by the NRC or an Agreement State.
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

Installation, relocation, repair, testing and servicing was performed by John Potter Associaton until November 8, 1991, when they terminated their material's license (29-14814-01).

As of the effective date of this registration certificate, this company apparently is no longer in business.

Based on review of the Merrick-Scale Model NCPM, and the information contained in this registration sheet and the references below, we continue to conclude that the device is acceptable for licensing purposes.

Furthermore, we continue to conclude that the device would be expected to maintain its containment integrity for normal conditions of use and accidental conditions which might occur during uses specified in this certificate.
