Dear Mr. Lochbaum:

I am responding to your letter to Mr. Samuel J. Collins, datid June 24,1998, commenting upon a -

l request made by Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC). . Specifically, NMPC requested in L their letter dated February 27,1998, that the NRC approve extending the interval for the next

~ inspection of the core shroud welds at Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit 1 (NMP1), from 10,600 to 14,500 hot operating hours. In your letter, you commented about water chemistry and testing of the boat samples. You asked how operating cycle 13 relates to refueling outage 15 and you requested that one of the propnetary figures in NMPC's s' ubmittal be made publicly available, that UCS receive copies if NMPC should reply to your comments, and that the NRC consider holding another public meeting'on this issue near the site.

Your comments will be considered by the staff during its continuing review of NMPC's request.

I understand NMPC intends to provide written comments to the NRC staff regarding your letter.

NMPC's comments will be publicly available and copies will be forwarded to you upon receipt.

After receipt of NMPC's comments, the NRC will determine whether or not the proprietary figure

can be made publicly available. The NRC staff is aware that NMPC's request is of considerable j
interest to the public and local officials, and we intend to hold a meeting near the site to hear '

' from members of the public and local officials on this issue as part of our review process.

I appreciate your interest in this matter and I believe the forthcoming comments from NMPC, our -

future meeting with the public, and the staff's evaluation should be responsive to your concems.
