Subject:

Replacement of #3 Station Battery

Dear Sirs:

In accordance with a telephone conversation on June 18, 1987 between Region I and Yankee, the replacement of our #3 Station battery is proceeding on schedule. The batteries and racks have been ordered and other materials are in the process of being ordered. All hardware, design change documents and procedures will be ready such that the new battery will be put in service at the first cold shutdown for other reasons of sufficient duration af ter May 1, 1988.

Final installation and testing of the battery, charger and distribution system will require cold shutdown for approximately two weeks.

A detailed technical evaluation of the continued capability of Battery

  1. 3'has been performed by the battery manufacturer and Yankee engineering.

The results of these evaluations have shown that:

A) The battery has a current actual capacity of 83.3% based on IEEE 450 methods using a one hour test.

Industry recommendations are to institute replacement upon reaching 80% of capacity for this test.

B)- A capacity test calculated by a rate rather than time method would have indicated a 91% capacity.

The battery currently has a 40* design margin over the design

/

C) load profile.

To provide further assurance of the capability of the battery to meet its loads during the next cycle, we will perform regular inspections of the battery and perform additional short term capability tests per recommendation of the manuf acturer af ter approximately 12 months of operation.

We trust that this information meets your needs.

~

Very truly yours,
