.y e-Rev. 1 9/25/87 ATTAC MENT A REPAIR PROCEDURE - NAC-lE SHIPPING CASK PURPOSE:

A fillet weld was placed around the NAC-1E cask lid to achieve a seal.

During removal of this weld, areas of base material were removed from the cask body (top forging) and cask lid outside diameter at the mating surface of the two components.

The condition exists at a point 2-1/2" outward from the actual seal contact surfaces.

The purpose of -this repair is to restore both components to original drawing requirements.

Eu renenecs 2 PROCEDURE:

1.

Where required remove.by grinding, surface defects / roughness on the top forging and lid which may interfere with liquid penetrant inspection and-evaluation of all affected areas.

2.

-1.iquid penetrant inspect all affected areas of the top forging and lid, including at least 1" of base material adjacent to those areas.

(No relevant indications allowed-)

Personnel and procedures shall be developed and qualified in accordance with the ASME Ccde,Section V.

WV1 3.

Inspect and record counterbore depth for the lid.

This dimension will be used later to-determine metal removed from cask top forging.

4.

Repair undercut areas of' the cask top forging by weld overlay.

The extent of overlay shall be controlled to assure that a sufficient amount' of weld is deposited to allow for re-machining.

All welding shall be in accordance with procedures developed in accordance with Section IX of the ASME Code.

Welding personnel will be qualified in accordance with the same Section.

Re-machine top forging of cask body to restore original flatness and

finish requirements.

Exercise care to assure minimum material removal.

Upon completion of machining re-inspect for conformance to drawing; also inspect and record dimension previously checked in Step 3 to verify

Record flatness.

Where required, weld overlay the edge of cask lid to permit the machining of a.38" x 45' bevel at the mating interface of cask lid to body (the t

25.500" diameter of the cask lid).

7.

Machine outside dimension of cask lid to achieve the.38" x 45' bevel as

described in Step 6.

Inspect and record flatness, diameter and finish.

Liquid penetrant inspect all repaired areas of the top forging and cask lid, and at least 1" of the base material adjacent to those areas.

No linear indications are allowed.

Rounded indications as defined in ASME Code,Section VIII are permitted.

9.

Install new head bolt helicoils and new head bolts.

10. Perform a complete annual inspection as required by Certificate of Compliance 9183, current revision.
