Dear'Mr. Schnell:

SUBJECT:

-CALLAWAY - FIRST 10-YEAR INSERVICE TESTING PROGRAM UPDATE i

The Callaway First Ten Year Inservice Testin able by the staff (with certain exceptions) for g (IST) program was implementation founddated by letter accept-August 19, 1987. That review encompassed the initial submittal of January 31, 1984 and subseauent revisions up to and including the April 14, 1987 revision.

On July 28, 1987, you provided a further update to the program.

~ Based on the review of your IST program revision and relief requests, the staff

. concludes that the IST program will provide reasonable assurance of the operational readiness of the pumps and valves covered by the IST program to perform their safety-related functions. All changes and/or relief requests in your July 28, 1987 update are acceptable.

Based on our review, we have determined that the testing for which the relief has been requested and approved is impractical to perform and that pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(1) the granting of this relief is authorized by law and will not endanger life or property or the common defense and security and is  !

otherwise in the public interest. In making this determination, we have given due consideration to the burden that would result if these requirements were imposed on your facilities.

A copy of the related Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

Sincerely, David L. Wigginton, Acting Director Project Directorate III-3 Division of Reactor Projects
