this office on January 5, 6, 23-27, 1989, of activities authorized by NRC

License Nos. DPR-44 and DPR-56 at the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station

(PBAPS), Delta, Pennsylvania and to the discussions of our findings held by

Mr. Keimig with Mr. D. Smith, Vice President, PBAPS, and others at the

conclusion of the inspection.

Areas examined during this inspection are described in the NRC Region I

Inspection Report which is enclosed with this letter. Within these areas, the

inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and

,

representative records, interviews with personnel, and observations by the

l

inspector.

We found that the security program being implemented at the PBAPS has been

.!

significantly improved over past programs and performance, in terms of the

number of changes made, and the extent of those changes. This has resulted in

the implementation of an ef fective security program. We note the considerable

efforts that were expended to accomplish those changes. We are also encouraged

by the obvious management attention and support afforded to the security

!

program and anticipate it to continue at an appropriate level.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790(a), a copy of this letter and the enclosed

inspection report will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
