Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 ATTN:

Document Control Desk Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant Docket Nos: 50-282 License Nos. DPR-42 50 306 DPR-42 Additional Information on Rec Guide 1.97 In our September 15, 1983 submittal regarding Reg Guide 1.97, we committed to reviewing our Reg Guide 1.97, Type "A" variable list after the completion of new Emergency Operating procedures, and to inform you of required changes to this list. This review is now complete and an additional Type "A" variable has been identified. This variable is wide range steam generator level which is used in the E0P's as a criteria to control auxiliary feedwater flow to the steam generator to avoid overfilling.

This variable is monitored on each steam generator by redundant channels that are part of our Event Monitoring System.

The sensors, wiring, and rack modules for these channels meet all the requirements of a class 1E system, including seismic and environmental qualification, physical separation, independence of battery backed power sources, and quality control l

requirements. The channels are an input to our Emergency Response Facility computer system and are displayed via the safety parameter display system as described in our SPDS Safety Analysis Report submitted April 10, 1984.

In addition, a 2 pen recorder is installed in the main control panel to display and record the wide range level channels associated with each steam generator in accordance with our approved Control Room Design Review program.

The two wide range steam generator level recorders for each unit meet the environmental and seismic requirements for category 1 and are powered from battery backed power sources.

Each recorder signal input channel is provided with signal isolation to insure channel separation.
