l RE00EST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION POWER UPRATING CALLAWAY PLANT, l' NIT 1 DOCKET N0. 50-483 by letter dated September 18, 1987, the Union Electric Company responded to the staff's questions regardina the effect of power uprating on turbine missile protection. The licensee's response was insufficient to complete our review. Ve request the following adoitional information:

(1) Since the 1970's, cracks due-to stress corrosion have been discovereo on the' shrunk-on wheels and keyways of the low pressure turbines that are manufactured by General Electric and other vendors; therefore:

a) Provide a description and diagrams of the wheel and keyway geometry.

b) Frovide qualitative ana/or quantitative analysis demonstrating that uprating will not increase the chance of stress corrosion cracking.

(2) As part of above analysis (Question 1, part b), provide a detailed discussion of the effects of the following pararreters on the failure probability of turbine missile generation:

a) Discuss the effect of the change in the operating temperature of the turbine wheels.

~

b) Discuss the effect of the changes in the steam entering the low pressure turbines; specifically, the quality, volume, oxygen concentration, mass flow rate, and speed of the steara.

(3) The licensee has stated that the turbine overspeed protection system will not be modified for uprating because the turbine speed will be the same as before. However, during abnormal events such as full load rejection, the turbine nay experience more steari than the original design capacity which may or may not cause the turbine speed to increase. The licensee's response in this matter is vague. Describe the operation and sequence of the turbine overspeed protection system during the following events: a) full load rejection and b) turbine runaway.
