A conference call was held between Carolina Power & Light Company (CP&L) and your staff on June 24,1987 concerning the Anticipated Transient Without Scram (ATWS)
Recirculation Pump Trip (RPT)/ Alternate Rod Injection (ARI) System. In that call,
'CP&L~ committed to prcvide additional information concerning testability of the system. This information is attached.
Please refer questions regarding this matter to Mr. Sherwood R. Zimmerman at (919) 836-6242.

L Attached are revised figures originally submitted on June 18,1987. Below are explanations of changes made to the figures in addition to the additional information concerning testing.
FIGURE 10: ' Test switch contacts S14A and 514B have been removed from the circuit downstream of the K46 relay contacts thereby allowing relays 3-1,3-2, and 3-5 to function during an "at-power" test.
FIGURES 11 and 12:' The circuits shall be revised to add test switch isolation contacts in.
the power circuit to the solenoid valves. This change will allow relays 3-3 and 3-4.to j
L
' actuate during a test. When in test status, i.e.,' S14A or S14B switch contact open, L
circuit resistance measurements will be taken from a terminal point located af ter the test switch contacts and prior to the auxiliary contacts of relays 3-3 and 3-4 to a terminal point located after the auxiliary contacts of relays 3-3 and 3-4.
This will ensure that the contacts which energize the solenoid valves are closed during an "at-power" test.
GENERAL: The existing Maintenance Surveillance Test for ATWS shall be revised to incorporate the verification of relay contact closure for relays 3-3 and 3-4. Figures 11 I
and 12 also indicate additional solenoids being added for blowdown of the scram pilot air header. These additions will allow rapid depressurization of the air header and ensure rod motion and insertion time can be achieved, t
