This refers to the special safaty inspection conducted by Messrs. J. E. Hard
and M. M. Moser of this office on June 18 through July 2, 1987, of activities
at the Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit 1, authorized by NRC

Operating License No. DPR-42 and to the discussion of our findings 'dith

Mr. E. Watzl and other members of your staff at the conclusion of f he
inspection.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
,
the inspection which relate to the inoperability of the No. 11 safety injection
pump and to an apparent violation of NRC requirements.
This violation is being
reviewed for potential escalated enforcement action.
You will be notified in
subsequent correspondence as to the resolution of this finding.
We wish to meet with you and your representatives in the Region III office,

Glen Ellyn, Illinois to discuss the conditions surrounding the above issue

and your assessment of the safety significance of the event.
