Dear Mr. Malody:
This is in reply to your August 27, 1987, letter to Mr. Robert M. Bernero, Deputy Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards, requesting modification of a license condition placed on Advanced Nuclear Fuels Corporation (ANF) by an Order dated August 19, 1987. The Order, among other things, restricted the use of 1-inch Superior Valves used in UF6 cylinders. The restricted valves were those in Superior Lots numbered 16 through 22.
On September 25, 1987, the NRC modified the original Order to permit all NRC licensees to use valves from Superior Lot Number 16. Conversations with Mr.
Schneider of ANF indicate that this action alleviates your current problems concerning loss of production because of unavailability of acceptable valves.
Accordingly, we plan to take no further action on your request.
The Department of Energy (00E) is continuing its study on valves in Lots 17-22.
With your permission, we have forwarded to DOE your views on decertification as an option in resolution of the problem.
