2) Letter OPPD (Jones) to NRC (Seyfrit) dated March 20, 1981

Dear Mr. Gagliardo:

Inspection Report 81-01 In reference 2, OPPD provided a response to violation 285/8101-01, which committed to an " Engineering Evaluation...to provide a ' door ajar' alann" for the cask decontamination room (Room 68). Our purpose was to assure compliance with the Radiation Protection Manual, section 3.1.8.2, which states Uet " Access doors to very high radiation areas shall be provided with locked access doors and kept locked unless someone is actually inside or has continuous and direct control over the entrance to the crea."

Our evallation concluded that a " door ajar" alarm for Room 68 is not warranted or necessary.

Room 68 has been classified as a "very high radiation area" only on infrequent occassions. Those few occassions that Room 68 has been classified as a "very high radiation area" have been short perieds.

Furthermore, Standing Order T-8, which requires all "very high radiation area" access doors to be locked and monitored as part of the Daily Radiation Survey, has been a successful administrative control.

Instelling a " door ajar" alarm for Room 68 is therefore deemed unnecessary.

If you should have any questions, please do not hesitate to call.
