i MONTICELLO NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT SAFETY / RELIEF VALVE FAILURES AND CHALLENGES

1988 This report is made in accordance with NUREG-0737, Item II.K.3.3 and' Monticello Technical Specification 6.7. A.6 and covers the period of January 1,.1988 through December 31, 1988.
1 12-16-88 Five SRVs were challenged to operate in 1988. On December 16, 1988 following a' simultaneous turbine.and feed pump trip and subsequent reactor scram ~from 100% power all three-low-low set SRVs SRVs E, G, and H, opened at their prescribed set points.
Due to the nature'of the event reactor. pressure was not limited by the low-low set SRVs and 2 additional SRVs, SRVs A and B,.
opened at their self actuation set points. All five SRVs reciesed at their prescribed closing set points'and reactor pressure was subsequently controlled with the turbine bypass valves. During this event. low-low set SRVs E, G, and H, and self actuated SRVs A and B, opened and closed one time each.
