QUESTION 12 Has any bias been observed in'the radial power distributions for Cycles 8 through 10? Please provide radial power distributions to support your conclusions.

RESPONSE

There has been no significant radial bias observed for the N0DE-B model in Cycles 8, 9 and 10. The only power distribution data to support this conclusion is from Hatch Cycle 1 gamma scan comparisons provided in Figure 4.48 from'TR-21. There is a larger uncertainty in bundles located adjacent to the core periphery due to leakage effects. The mean integral error for these bundles is -2.25 + 4.04 while the mean integral error for the interior bundles is 0.548 + 2.25.

In order to relate these results to Oyster Creek since there is no Oyster Creek gamma scan. data, it is necessary to look at the data for the TIP integral errors. Although the Oyster Creek and Hatch plants do not have incore instruments in the same core locations, the instruments in both plants would cover a complete quarter core. The TIP integral errors for the three i Hatch statepoints prior to the gamma scans are shown in Table 12-1. Tables i 12-2 to 12-4 contain the TIP integral errors for some of the statepoints in OC Cycles 8, 9 and 10 respectively.

I 1

2722C I

.____.l_._

4 The data in Tables 12-1 through 12-4 are plotted as a function of core radius and shown in Figures 12-1 through 12-4. The TIP integral errors for Hatch Cycle 1 shows no significant bias, except for the more negative TIP errors near the core periphery. This coincides with the errors in the gamma scan comparisons. The error distribution for OC Cycles 9 and 10 do not show any radial bias and is similar to that of Hatch Cycle 1. OC Cycle 8 does appear to show some radial bias, but the bias is not considered significant since the overall model performance for Cycle 8 was good and the bias did not carry over to future cycles.

NOTE: All errors presented in the following tables and figures are expressed as percent error as defined in TR-021.
