" Thermal Stresses in Piping Connected to Reactor Coolant Systems" j

dated September 28, 1988 (ST-HL-AE-2788)

In accordance with Reporting Requirement 2 of Bulletin 88-008, Houston Lighting & Power Company (HL&P) provides the following supplemental information for Unit 2.

A response for Unit I will be submitted in accordance with the schedule outlined in the above Reference.

With regard to Action Item 2 of the Bulletin, HL&P has completed f

ultrasonic non-destructive examination of potentially susceptible welds and fittings in unisolable piping connected to the Unit 2 Reactor Coolant System.

No flaws were identified.

HL&P has developed its plan to preclude adverse thermal and cyclic stresses on these sections of piping. HL&P will install additional instrumentation to monitor the piping metal temperature during heat-up, hot standby, power ascension, normal operations, and cool-down cycles.

The schedule for this installation is: Unit 1, prior to the end of the first refueling outage; Unit 2, prior to initial criticality (Mode 2).

This instrumentation will be used in determining adverse temperature distributions in the piping.

If you should have any questions on this matter, please contact Mr. M. A. McBurnett at (512) 972-8530.
