1 PASS STATUS REPORT 9/14/87

SUMMARY

The PASS is designed to sample the following three items:

1) Reactor Building Atmosphere
2) Decay Heat System
3) Reactor Coolant System The Reactor Building Atmosphere sampling capability was tested by STP (Special Test Procedure) 432 and verified the system functioned properly. The procedure is undergoing results review / approval. j The Decay Heat System sampling capability will be tested.by STP-430. l The test is in progress and should be completed by 9/18/87, l l

The Reactor Coolant Systera sampling capability will be tested by STP-433 which is on hold pending incorporation of initial Test Working  !

Group (TWG) comments. The procedure will remain on hold until Decay Heat Sample testing is complete and any problems have been resolved.

This test will not be conducted until the Reactor is at 15% power so l that the liquid sample temperature will be at a maximum. l SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS There are a total of seven open Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) of which four are work complete and three are in progress. The status l of each is as follows: l l

1) Work Complete l A-4711I ADD BACKUP SOURCE OF FLUSH AND COOLING WATER Release of this ECN is pending performance of STP-433.

R-0361 ADD DHS SAMPLE CHECK VALVES Release of this ECN is pending valve in-service leak j checks with the RCS at normal temperature / pressure.

R-0488 HYDROGEN MONITOR / PASS SAMPLE LINE HEAT TRACING i

Release of this ECN is pending performance of STP-793 l l (Heat Tracing Functional Test). l R-0732 BACKUP LAB FOR PASS GRAB SAMPLES Release of this ECN is pending performance of STP-430.

1

2) Work In Progress A-5735 ADD PASS ION CHROMAT0 GRAPE Work completion is pending changeout of e. cannon plug and fabrication of a plexiglass cover for a chart recorder. Final release of this ECN is pending the performance of STP-430.

R-0285 REPLACE DECAY HEAT SYSTEM SAMPLE VALVES j Work completion is pending receipt of spare parts for the repair of one sample valve followed by valve leak tests. The spare parts are expected on 9/25/87..

Final release is pending work completion. )

i R-0559 SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS SKID (SCAS) CHANGES The only work pending is the installation of lighting in the vicinity of the SCAS. However, additional changes to the SCAS are anticipated as a result of system testing. Final release of the ECN is pending performance of STP-433.

Two additional minor ECNs are to be created. One will relocate the nitrogen bottles used for system flushing and dilution to the same room containing the PASS control panel. The second will replace the i backup flush / dilution water conductivity indicator and demineralized, I presently being leased, with permanent equipment. l TESTING In addition to the three primary Special Test Procedures described i in the

SUMMARY

there are four additional tests to be conducted. The status of each is as follows:

1 STP-426 SAMPLING TIMES USING THE PASS Procedure development is on hold pending approval of the PASS Operating Procedure AP.313-1. This STP times the Chemistry Technicians during the sampling process using AP.313-1.

STP-428 MEASURMENT OF (SCAS) VOLUMES A AND B The procedure has been reviewed by the TWG (Test Working l Group). Once their-comments are incorporated additional  !

TWG review is required. This procedure is on hold pending completion of STP-793, STP-429 and STP-430.

STP-429 MEASUREMENT OF (SCAS) VOLUMES S AND T This procedure was performed and is in the results review / l approval phase.  ;

STP-793 HYDROGEN MONITOR / PASS HEAT TRACING FUNCTIONAL TEST This procedure was performed but there was some difficulty j in mee',ing the acceptance criteria. The test is on hold i while Nuclear Engineering evaluates the test results and l acceptance criteria. l l

SURVEILLANCE PROCEDURE A surveillance procedure (SP 907) will be developed for the monthly functional test of the system. Procedure development is pending manpower availability.

1 O s CHEMISTRY PROCEDURES There are five Chemistry procedures associated with the PASS. -Two have been approved and three are in development. Of the three not yet approved, two are in the review / approval phase and one is on hold. 1 The most important one, AP.313-1 (PASS Operating Procedure), is on l hold pending performance of STP-430 (DHS Sa'mple Test). The procedure has been drafted and will be finalized following the satisfactory performance of STP-430. STP-430 duplicates the majority of the steps in AP.313-1 and will be used as a validation for-the procedure.

TRAINING.

All Chemistry Technicians have received four hours of formal class- )

room training. When procedure AP.313-1 is finalized, six Chemistry i Technicians will initially be given hands-on training on the PASS. I l

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE The PM program has been reviewed by the PM Supervisor. A list of  ;

instruments not currently in the program was developed and will be l used to compile the necessary information to complete the PM i i requirements. l l

SPARE. PARTS Nuclear Engineering developed a list of spare parts and submitted'it i to the Procurement Group.

l NRC INSPECTION NO. 87-26 Action has been taken on two items of concern expressed at this and previous inspections.

NUPAC SHIPPING CASK - PART 21 This item has been completed and is considered closed. l PASS LEAD BLANKET SHIELDING The lead blankets have been labeled as permanent shielding. l Small cable will be used to tie the blankets together and l when that is done this item will be complete. l AUDIT REPORT NO.87-042 The formal response to this audit report was competed on 9/10/87. l Page 3
