Gentlemen:

This refers to the routine safeguards inspection conducted by

Messrs. T. J. Madeda and J. R. Kniceley of thf s office on September 14-18,

1987, of activities at Braidwood Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1, authorized

by NRC Operating License No. NPF-59 ard to the discussion of our findings with

Mr. E. Fitzpatrick and other members cf your staff at' the conclusion of the

inspection.

The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during

the inspection. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective

examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and

interviews with personnel.

During this inspection, certain of your activities appeared to be in violation

of NRC requirements, as described in the enclosed Notice. The inspection

,

showed that action had been taken to correct the identified violation and

to prevent recurrence. Our understanding of your corrective actions are

described in Paragraph 6 of the enclosed inspection report. Consequently, no

,

reply to the violation is required and we have no further questions

I

regarding this matter at this time.

)

In addition, commitments made to resolve two weaknesses noted during the

inspection regarding your vital area control program and Safeguards

Information program are described in Pa ragraphs 5 and 7 of the Report
