Subject:

ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE OPERATOR DEGREE PROGRAM

Dear Mr. Enos:

This is in response to your'. letter of January 5,1987, concerning the engineering degree program for ANO-1 licensed operators and senior operators.

NRC agrees with the program and the proposed method of implementation as modified by the letters of June 17, 1987 and August 12, 1987, from Mr. Walter E.. Perks to Mr. Ralph A. Cooley.

NRC understands that ANO has made no. commitment to an ongoing program to obtain engineering degrees for licensed operators and senior operators at ANO. However, while such a program is in effect, NRC understands that AN0 has made commitment to specific procedures for maintaining the operating proficiency and requalification status of those licensed personnel participating in the program.

If the program is inactive for more than 6 months, NRC will consider it terminated and specific permission will be required to reactivate.the program if licensed personnel, who are required-to maintain a license in accordance with 10 CFR 55.59, will participate.

NRC commends the voluntary efforts of ANO to obtain engineering degrees for its licensed personnel and feels that both ANO and the nuclear industry as a whole will greatly benefit from such action.

If you have any questions concerning this or related matters, please call Mr. Cooley at (817) 860-8147.

Thank you for your responsiveness and cooperation in this matter.

Sincerely.
