-SNM-1097 70-1113 General Electric Company ATTN: Mr. T. Preston Winslow Manager, Licensing & Nuclear SEP 2 51987 Materials Management P. O. Box 780 Wilmington, North Carolina 28402 Gentlemen:

SUBJECT:

MODIFICATION OF ORDER As stated in the Order regarding UF cylinder valves issued to you by the g

Nuclear Regulatory Commission on August 19, 1987, the Director of the Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards may relax or rescind any of the conditions of the Order upon a showing of good cause. The Order directed that valves manufactured by the Superior Valve Company, lots 16-22, not be used on 30- and 40-inch uranium hexafluoride cylinders due to the possibility of cracking of valve threads.

Based on a review by Martin-Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., Paducah, Kentucky, of manufacturing information relative to 1-inch Superior Valve Company UF cylindervalves, theDepartmentofEnergy(DOE),SafetyandHealthDivisi$n, has recommended to the NRC that 1-inch Superior Valves from lot (heat) 16 be authorized for use. DOC indicates that lot 16 has not had evidence of failure in use and is of an acceptable heat of material.

Accordingly, effective immediately, Condition 1 of the Order prohibiting the use of valves in Superior Valve Company Lots numbered 16-22.is hereby modified to read:

1.

General Electric Company, shall not fill, heat, empty, or deliver to a carrier for transport 48-inch and 30-inch uranium hexafluoride cylinders fitted with Superior Valve Company 1-inch valves manufactured in Superior Valve Company Lots numbered 17 through 22.

All other conditions of the Order shall remain in effect..
