HANDGUN DETECTED DURING SEARCH At 3:06 p.m., July 3,.1987, plant security personnel detected a loaded handgun in a gym, bag during a routine x-ray machine search at a protected area entrance point. The handgun was a.380 caliber "Astra Constable". Also detected, was a spare clip of ammunition. The gym bag belonged to a contract boilermaker who had been badged for unescorted access to the protected area since May 29, 1987.
The individual, the handgun and the ammunition were turned over to the local Limerick To.vnship police.
The contract employee did not have a permit for this weapon.
Site access was terminated, t
The pleat was in the 45th-day of a refueling outage with reactor fuel offloaded.
The IAT and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have been notified.
The Senior Resident Inspector received notification of this event at 6:40 p.m. on July 3; the NRC was notified via the ENS at 8:20 p.m. on July 3; and this PNS is current as of 10:00 a.m., July 6,1987.
