l OF CALLAWAY PLANT IN MISSOURI The Nuclear Regulatory Commission Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation issued an operating license on June 11 to Union Electric Company authorizing it to load fuel into the Callaway Plant and to conduct low power testing up to five percent of full power.
The nuclear plant is located in Callaway County, Missouri, about 10 miles southeast of Fulton.
The Callaway Plant uses a pressurized water reactor and at full power will have an electrical output of about 1150 megawatts.
The operating license for Callaway was the subject of a public hearing

conducted by an Atomic Safety and Licensing Board. The Board issued decisions in December of 1987 and October 1983 on the contested issues litigated at the c
hearing. The decisions authorized the Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation to issue the operating license upon completion of the plant after making the required findings on safety and environmental matters which were not at issue in the hearing.
l The license issued by the NRC staff is for full power operation for a l
period of 40 years from the date of issuance.
However, operation is restricted to fuel loading and low power testing.
Full power operaticn requires the approval of the Commission itself.
