1 1.

SCOPE' This procedure delineates the techniques for the ultrasonic measurement' of. material thickness.

1 Note:A.

For thicknesses from.250 inches to 1.50 inches.the dual crystal method is generally used.

1 B.

For thicknesses 1.50. inches the single crystal method'is i

preferred.

C.

For thicknesses'

.250" the delay tip single crystal method is preferred.

ASNT, SNT-TC-1A, 1980 Edition.

2.

NU-UT-1 Ultrasonic Examination ?:ocedure General Requirements l

2.2 PEF.SONNEL QUALIFICATION -

q 1.

Ultrasonie exa=ination personnel shall be certified in'accor-l dance with the above references.

2.

Thickness measurements for " code record" purposes shall be~

performed by personnel vithLa'ninimum qualification of Level l

II.

l 3.

Personnel performing ena=inations not required by code are not required to be certified to paragraph 2.2.1.

3.

CJ".MINATION REQUIREMENTS 3.1 E*JLGATION FREQUENCY 1.

Tne examination frequency shall be the highest available which vill provide adequate penet:ntion. Generally, 5.0 ME: is preferred.

2.

Pulse frequencies shall be deter =ined by such variables as material attenuation, thickness, etc., to achieve penetration' or resolution. This information shall be recorded on the.

data sheets.

1.

Lower frequencies are generally chosen for thicker sections and for cast material.

5.1 REFERDICE EI.0CK(S).

1.

Sa=ples of-the identical caterial and known thickness should be used. As an alternate, sa=ples of a si=ilar material and the i

same metallurgical structure as that of the ena=1 nation ite=

i may be used.

2.

At least two different known thickness sa=ples are required-for certain ultrasonic thickness calibrations. One'sa=ple should be thinner than the examination item, and one sample should be. thicker than the examination item.

If'other samples are available, these should be machined to thicknesses between-t the above, in even increments, one of which should equal

" minim:m wall".

5.2 STRAIG'dT BEAM CALIBRA"' ION. (SINGLE CRYSTAL) j 1

Calibration shall be performed as follows; 1.

A 1" thick sample divided by 4 would indicate that each maior CRT division is ecual to.250" and'each miner CF*

In order to simplify the ca:hematics, calibration sa=ples which ultimately provide even CRT thicimess increments are adviscble. k~nere the choice of thickness saco.les is restricted, the bach reflections ay be aligned c: other CRT positions which may provide more convenien: thickness multiples, i.e. 3, 6, 0,
