PASS STATUS REPORT l

Dear Mr. Martin:

l Attached for your information is a revised PASS Status Report. The report has been reformatted into a narrative report which summarizes the status of 1 Modifications, Testing, Procedures, Training, Maintenance and Spare Parts.

This new format should be easier to follow. A copy of this report has been provided to the Resident Inspector's Office.

Should you have any questions, please contact Bob Fraser at extension 4364 or Masa Nakao at extension 3905.

Sincerely, J st'wApas

PASS STATUS REPORT 8/31/87

SUMMARY

The PASS is designed to sample the following three items:

1) Reactor Building Atmosphere
2) Decay Heat System
3) Ret: tor Coolant System The Reactor building Atmosphere sampling capability was tested by STP (Special Test Procedure) 432 and ver,1fied the system functioned properly. The procedure is undergoing results review / approval.

The Decay Heat System sampling capability will be tested by STP-430 l which has been approved and is on hold pending completion of several l projects which are constraints to the test. l The Reactor Coolant System sampling capability will be tested by STP-433 which is on ho1d pending incorporation of initial Test Working Group (TWG) comments. The procedure will remain on hold until Decay l Heat Sample testing is complete and any problems have been resolved. l This test will not be conducted until the Reactor Coolant System is at operating temperature and pressure.

SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS There are a total of eight open Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) of which four are work complete and four are in progress. The status of l l each is as follows: l

1) Work Complete A-4711I ADD BACKUP SQURCE OF FLUSH AND COOLING WATER Release of this ECN is pending performance of STP-433.

R-0361 ADD DHS SAMPLE CHECK VALVES Release of this ECN is pending valve in-service leak checks with the BCS at normal temperature / pressure.

R-0732 BACKUP LAB FOR PASS GRAB SAMPLES Release of this ECN is pending' performance of STP-430.

R-5773 ADD RADIATION MONITOR AND RELOCATE IGE l Release of this ECM is pending final approval of an l interim change to Surveillance Procedure 200.03. l

2) Work In Progress A-5735 ADD PASS ION CHROMAT0 GRAPH Work completion is pending changeout of a cannon plug and fabrication of a plexiglass cover for a chart recorder. Final release.of this ECN is pending the l performance of STP-430.

R-0285 REPLACE DECAY HEAT SYSTEM ~ SAMPLE. VALVES- q Work completion is pending receipt of spare parts for I the repair of one sample valve followed by valve leak tests. The spare parts are expected on 9/25/87.

Final release is pending work' completion.

R-0488 HYDROGEN MONITOR / PASS SAMPLE LINE HEAT TRACING Work completion is pending rework of the heat tracing and/or insulation on the final section of the PASS sample line. Final release is pending performance of i STP-793 (Heat Tracing Functional Test).  !

R-0559 SAMPLE COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS SKID (SCAS) CHANGES The only work pending is the installation of lighting ~

in the vicinity of the SCAS. However, additional changes to the SCAS are anticipated as a result of system testing. Final release of the ECN is pending performance of STP-433. )

Two additional minor ECNs are to be created. One will relocate the i nitrogen bottles used for system flushing and dilution to the same i room containing the PASS control panel.. The second will replace the i backup flush / dilution water conductivity indicator and demineraliser, presently being leased, with permanent equipment.

TESTING l l l In addition to the three primary Special Test Procedures described I in the

SUMMARY

there are four additional tests to be conducted. The l status of each is as follows: i 1

l STP-426 SAMPLING TIMES USING THE PASS Procedure development is on hold pending approval of the I PASS Operating Procedure AP.313-1. This STP times the Chemistry Technicians'during the sampling process using l AP.313-1.

STP-428 MEASURMENT OF (SCAS) VOLUMES A AND B The procedure has been reviewed by the TWG (Test Working Group). Once their comments are incorporated additional TWG review is required. This procedure is on hold pending  !

completion of STP-793, STP-429,and STP-430. _ l STP-429 MEASUREMENT OF (SCAS) VOLUMES S AND T The procedure has been approved and is in progress. l STP-793 HYDROGEN MONITOR / PASS HEAT TRACING FUNCTIONAL TEST This procedure has been approved. The procedure was '

attempted once but was stopped when the temperature of the gas sample failed to meet the acceptance criteria.

The procedure is on hold pending reinsulation of the final  ;

section of the PASS sample line which is in progress.  ;

e SURVEILLANCE PROCEDURE A surveillance procedure (SP 907) will be developed for the monthly functional test of the system. Procedure development is pending manpower availability.

CHEMISTRY PROCEDURES 1 I

There are five Chemistry procedures associated with the PASS. Two i have been approved and three are in development. Of the three not yet approved, two are in the review / approval phase and one is on hold.

The most important one, AP.313-1 (PASS Operating Procedure), is_on hold pending performance of STP-430 (DHF Sample Test). The procedure has been drafted and will be finalized following performance of STP- J 430. STP-430 duplicates the majority of the steps in AP.313-1 and will be used as a validation for the procedure.

TRAINING All Chemistry Technicians have received four hours of formal class-room training. When procedure AP.313-1 is finalized, six Chemistry l Technicians will initially be given hands-on training on the PASS.

PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE PM program review is pendin6 manpower availability.

SPARE PARTS Nuclear Engineering developed a list of spare parts and submitted it to the Procurement Group.
