Subject:
Duke Energy Corporation Catawba Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2 Docket Numbers 50-413 and 50-414 Technical Specification (TS) Table 3.6-2,
" Containment Isolation Valves" Discussion of Identified Errors in Table
)
The purpose of this letter is to document a recent discussion between Mr. M.S.
Kitlan, Jr. of my staff and Mr.
P.S.
Tam of your office.
The subject of the discussion was an Unresolved Item (URI) generated by the resident inspector at Catawba concerning certain valves which appear to meet the criteria for inclusion in TS Table 3.6-2 but were nevertheless not included.
Catawba has reviewed TS Table 3.6-2 and Updated Final Safety Analysis Report (UFSAR) Table 6-77, " Containment Isolation Valve Data", and has concluded that the following valves should have been included in the TS table:
- Valves associated with the containment radiation monitoring function (MISV5230, MISV5231, MISV5232, and MISV5233)
Valves associated with the integrated leak rate test pressure lines (MIMV6481, MIMV6480, MIMV6491, MIMV6490, MIMV6471, and MIMV6470)
Valves associated with the personnel airlock air supply lines (IASV5160 and IASV5080) and the auto volumetric supply lines (IASV5410 and IASV5400)
Steam generator auxiliary feedwater to reverse purge isolation valves (CF151, CF152, CF153, and CF154)

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 May 9, 1998 In addition, the following errors have been identified in TS Table 3.6-2:
The Unit 2 table is missing a "*" after valve SM-73 (Page 3/4 6-28, twelfth entry from bottom of page).
The Unit 1 table is correct.
The Unit 2 table incorrectly lists valve CF-121 on Page 3/4 6-28 (tenth entry from top of page).
The correct entry should be CA-121.
The Unit 1 table is correct.
- Both the Unit 1 and Unit 2 tables have an error associated with the footnote "**" under " TABLE NOTATIONS" on Page 3/4 6-29.
The footnotes incorrectly make reference to a high relative humidity isolation signal.
The high relative humidity isolation function was deleted by License Amendments 118/112 for Units 1/2, respectively.
The Unit 1 table makes an incorrect reference to valve VY-312A (Page 3/4 6-25, tenth entry from bottom of page).
The correct reference should be VI-312A. 'The Unit 2 table is correct.
The Unit 1 table incorrectly lists valve RF-389A (Page 3/4 6-25, ninth entry from top of page).
The correct
{
entry should be RF-389B.
The Unit 2. table is correct.
Per the above referenced discussion, it was noted that on May 27, 1997, Catawba made its submittal to convert the existing Catawba TS to the Improved TS.
The Improved TS does not contain any tables'of containment isolation valves.
The Catawba Improved TS conversion submittal proposes relocation of the information in TS Table 3.6-2 to the UFSAR.
The Improved TS are scheduled to be implemented at Catawba in January 1999.
Following implementation of the Improved TS, Catawba will determine whether the UFSAR contains the appropriate information relative to what valves are listed as containment isolation valves.
Necessary 1
changes will be made to the UFSAR as appropriate.
In j
addition, the editorial errors identified above will be corrected.
If you have any questions concerning this information, please call L.J.
Rudy at (803) 831-3084.
