and " Safety Guide on Decommissioning of Medical, industrial, and Research Facilities." Our comments on " Safety Guide on Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants and Large Research Reactors" are attached. We do not have any comments on the second document.

Comments on Draft Safety Guide on Decommissioning of Nuclear Power Plants and Large Research Reactors Comment 1. Section 2. Dage 3 Section 2 should be expanded to provide a discussion on how public interest will be factored into the decommissioning process.
Comment 2. Section 5. Dage 14 The section should be expanded to include a recommendation that a survey be conducted at the new facility, prior to loading fuel, to establish background. Establishing background early in the process will eliminate the problem of establishing background at the time of decommissioning.
Comment 3. Section 5. Dage 14 The section should be expanded to discuss the location of groundwater wells. If the groundwater well locations are established in the planning stage, understanding the extent of the contamination at the time of decommissioning will be easier.
Comment 4. Section 5. Daae 15 Section 5.11 should be expanded to include a description of the release criteria. It is important to establish to what criteria the facility is being decontaminated as early as possible.
Comment 5. Fuel Removal. Sections 6.4 through 6.8. Daae 21 Sections 6.4 through 6.8 do not clearly address spent fuel retrievability and handling capabilities for a facility being decommissioned. Spent fuel that is temporarily stored at a facility prior to final disposal may need to be repackaged for shipment. These sections should ensure that the ability to retrieve and handle spent fuelis not eliminated by dismantlement of the facility.
Comment 6. Section 6.6. Dane 22 Section 6.6 (line 2) should be revised to add spent fuel retrievability after decommipsioning.
