SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE'

<NO.: NR19201010 DATE: August 18, 1965 PAGE 2 0F 3 DEVICE TYPE: Gauge Source Holder J

. DESCRIPTION:

The outer physical characteristics of the ML-1-1 are those of a closed steel cylinder seven inches in height by 6 and 5/8 inches in diameter mounted, with its longest axis vertical, on a 1/2 inch steel plate. The plate, welded to the e bottom of the device, serves as the base-and includes four 1/2 inch diameter-o mounting holes. The base plate is 6 and 5/8 inches by 9 and 1/8 inches.

Other external features include an electrical cable connector and a lock. The lock prevents removal of the device's 3/4 inch thick steel cover riate which is normally held-in place by eight machine screws.

-The source of radiation is mounted at the center of a cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-1,000 cylindrical shields assembled and secured by three bolts running vertically from top to bottom exterior-to the shield components.

The bolts are anchored at the bottom to a 1/4 inch steel plate and at the top of c a steel mounting plate which is attached by three machine screws to the cover 5 plate. The bottom half of the shield-assembly is also attached to the bottom j steel plate by three angle brackets and six machine screws.

A rotary solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shve+d-essembly has its rotor attached to an aluminum cylinder which has a Mallory-1,000 shutter block attached by'four machine screws to the inner surface. The application of power to the solenoid causes-the rotor to act against a return spring moving the aluminum cylinder and shutter block 25' exposing the 5/32 inch wide by 13/16 inch high

' beam port which extends radially from the center of the lower shield component.

-Interruption of electrical power to the solenoid allows the return spring to move the shutter block to the shielded or "off" position.

Internally mounted-limit switches indicate the position of the shutter block as "on" or "off" by lights at the control console. Two green lights and two red-lights (each pair wired in parallel) are used. Neither set of lights is on when the shutter block is in transit.

LABELING:

A metal label 3-3/8 inches by 2-3/16 inches, attached to the outside of the

- device 180* from the radiation beam, bears the following:

" CAUTION: RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL" Cesium-137 mc-(Date) l tiodel: ML-1-1 Brun Corporation, Columbus Ohio The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELSr

' Radiation levels at one foot from the surface of the ML-1-1 are everywhere less than 2 mr/hr_ with a 41 millicurie cesium-137 source. The maximum radiation level of11.7 mr/hr is at_ the front of the device at a point on .a horizontal plane through the source 30' from the center of the beam port.

LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

~The ML-1-1 cevice may be mounted at some distanace from the material to be measured and therefore~ consideration must be-given to access to the beam of radiation with the device in -the "on" condition. There is not a. mechanical or

-electrical "on-off" indicator at the device and the control panel may be located

several-feet from-the device.

The user is instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering with the device containing the cesium-137 source. The Brun Corporation states that a service-contract will normally be sold with each ML-1-1 to= include six months visits by Brun representative for the purpose of inspecting the devices and-performing source leak-tests.

The Brun Corporation has also stated that they will install and relocate the source holders ar.1 pa-form a radiation ~ survey at the time of installation.
