-SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE HQti NR-8094-D-801-S DATE: September 29, 1997 PAGE 2 OF 4 DEVICE TYP11 Gauge Source Holder.

DESCRIPTIONr The outer physical characteristics of the ML-1-1 are those of a closed steel-cylinder 7-inches (177.8 mm). in height by 6-5/8 inches (168.3 mm) in diameter mounted,- with its longest axis vertical, on a 1/2 inch' (12.7 mm) steel plate. The plate, welded to the bottom of'the device, serves as the base and

-includes four 1/2 inch diameter mounting holes. =The base plate is 6-5/8 inches . (168.3 mm) by 9-1/8. inches (231.8 mm).

Other external features include-an electrical-cable connector and' arlock.- The lock prevents removal of the-device's 3/4 inch (19.1 mm) thick steel cover plate which is normally held in place by eight: machine screws.

The source of radiation is mounted at the' center of a cylindrical shield consisting of two Mallory-loco cylindrical shields assembled and secured by three bolts running vertically from-the top to bottom exterior to the shield components. The bolts are anchored at the bottom to a 1/4 inch (6.4 mm) steel plate and at the top of a steel mounting plate which is attached by three machine screws to the cover plate. The bottom half of the shield assembly is also attached to the bottom steel plate by three angle brackets atd six machine screws.

A rotary-solenoid mounted at the bottom of the shield assembly has its rotor attached to an aluminum cylinder which has a Mallory-1000 shutter block attached by four machine screws to the inner surface _ The application of power to the solenoid causes the. rotor to act against a return spring moving the. aluminum cylinder and shutter block 25" exposing the 5/32 inch (4.0 mm) wide.by 13/16 inch (10.32 mm) high beam port which extends radially from the center of the lower shield component.  !

Interruption'of electrical power to the solenoid allows the return spring to. move the shutter block to the shielded or "off"

position.-

l Internally mounted limit switches indicate the position of the shutter block as *on" or "off" by lights at the control console.

TwoLgreen lights and two red lights (each pair wired in parallel) are used. . Neither set of lights is on when the shutter block is in transit.

-SAFETY EVALUATION OF DFVICE NO.: ~ NR-8094-D-801-S lDATE: September 129, 1997 EbGE'3 OF 4 DEVICE TYPE: Gauge Source Holder LABELING:

A metal label'3-3/8 inches (85.7 mm) by 2-3/16 inches (55.6 mm),

attached to the-outside of the device 180' from the radiation beam, contains the isotope, activity, model number, date of assay, the manufacturer, and the words, " CAUTION: RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL." The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering along with a magenta radiation symbol. .

PROTOTYPE TESTING:

Brun Sensors had stated that the ML-1-1 prototype had been used in_ steel mill environments for test periods of several hours.

These tests had indicated.the solenoid had been functioning satisfactorily through several cycles.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Radiation levels at one. foot from'the surface of the ML-1-1 are everywhere less than 2 mR/hr (20 pSv/hr) with a 41 millicurie (1.52 GBq) cealum-137 source. The maximum radiation-level of 1.7 mR/hr.(17 pSv) is at the front of the device at a point on a horizontal plane through the source 30' from the center of the beam port, LIMITATIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be

-determined by the licensing authority.

  • The device shall be leak tested at intervals not to exceed 6 months using techniques capable of detecting 0.005 microcurie (185 Bq) of removable contamination.
  • - . REVIEWER NOTE: The ML-1-1 device may:be mounted at some distance from the material to be measured and therefore consideration must be given to access to the beam of radiation with the device in the "on" condition. There is
not--a mechanical or electrical "on-off" indicator at the

! device and the control panel may be located several feet i from the device.

REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES SAFETY EVALUATION OF DEVICE NO.t NR-8094-D-801-S D2 September 29, 1997 PAGE 4 OF 4 DEVICE TYPEt Gauge Source Holder LIMITA.TIONS AND/OR OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE (cont.):

  • REVIEWER NOTE: The user was instructed by the Brun Corporation to avoid tampering with the device containing the cesium-13 7 source. The Brun Corporation stated that a service contract would normally be sold with each ML-1-L to include six month visits by Brun representatives for the purpose of inspecting the devices and performing source leak tests.
  • REVIEWER NOTE: The Brun Corporation had also stated that they would install and relocate the source holders and perform a radiation survey at the time of installation.

SAFETY ANALYSIS SUMMARX1 This device was originally approved for licensing purposes on August 18, 1965, by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The Model ML-1-1 Gauge Source Holder is no longe ~ manufactured and distributed by Brun Sensor Systems. Brun Sensor Systems' materials license terminated January 23, 1973 and was acquired by Industrial Nucleonics Corp, as a wholly-owned subsidiary, that same month.

There is insufficient information on file for this device to perform a safety evaluation. Therefore, this certificate 19 being taken to inactive status without further review, based on the original review and approval issued by the AEC.
