SUBJECT: NRC RADIATION PROTECTION INSPECTION REPORT 50-263/99012(DRS) )

Dear Mr. Wadley:

On September 17,1999, the NRC completed an inspection at your Monticello Nuclear

Generating Plant. The purpose of the inspection was to review the plant's processing, storage,

packaging, and transportation of radioactive waste. In addition, the inspection addressed j

external dosimetry'used in support of the radiation protection department. The enclosed report I

presents the results of that inspection. No violations of NRC requirements were identified.

Areas examined during the inspection are identified in the report. Within these areas, the l

inspection consisted of selective examinations of procedures and representative records, )

interviews with personnel, and observations of activities in progress.

The inspector found that, in general, your solid radioactive waste management, transportation

and extemal dosimetery programs were welHmplemented. Processing and storage of

radioactive wastes were carried out in accordance with NRC regulations and plant procadures.

In addition, radioactive waste shipments were properly classified, packaged, shipped, and

documented. Additionally, the extemal dosimetry portion of the radiation protection protram

was effective.

In accordance with 10 CFR 2.790 of the NRC's " Rules and Practice," a copy of this letter ad its

enclosure and your response will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room (PDR). l
