The water from SLDA consists of the purge water resulting from ground water well monitoring. The sampling protocols require that the wells be emptied (purged) three times before water sample is taken. The purge waters are retained and transferred to a collection tank that is located on the SLDA property. When the tank reaches maximum capacity, the contents are sampled and batch released via truck to ALCOS AN.
2 The Parks Facility liquid effluents are sink and shower water, ground water samples, related liquids and collected rainwater The main radioisotopes present are Am-241, Pu-238, Pu-239, Pu-240, Pu 241, Pu-242, U-234, U-235 U-238, Co-60 and Cs 137. The measured beta activity is attributed to Cs-137, which is the predominant beta emitter observed in the efiluent. Pu-241 beta activity is assumed to be present in a ratio of 6.69 times the transuranic alpha activity. The site liquids are transferred to the overall facility waste water tanks for filtration and batch analysis.
The tanks are released on a batch basis and are transferred to the Allegheny Valley Joint Sewage Authority (ALCOSAN) for disposal. ALCOSAN is a large regional sewage authority. The activity reported is based upon total beta and alpha activity measurements. They have proven to be more sensitive than gamnu spectroscopic measurements. A representative and conservative solubility state and isotope is selected form the isotopes present.
All the activity present is assumed to be due to this isotope. No allowance is made for background activity levels other than counting background.
3 The activity repotted is based upon total beta and alpha activity measurements. They have proven to be more sensitive for routine applications than ganuna spectroscopic measurements or higher level sampling and analysis protocols due to low activity and higher LLD associated with alternate analysis methods. The more conservative solubility state and isotope is selected from the principal isotopes present. All the activity present is assumed to be due to this isotope. No allowance is made for background activity levels other than counting background.
4 All alpha emitting isotopes in the SLD A waters are assumed to be from licensed materials (uranium). All alpha activity in the Parks Facility waters are assumed to be from licensed transuranics 5 In the SLDA, Cs 137 is possible, although unlikely trench constituent due to the Apollo Laundry Operations.
Uranium daughters and natural beta emitters are the dominant source of beta activity. Cs-137 was conservatively chosen as the limiting isotope because its associated 10CFR20, Appendix B limit is significantly lower than the limits associated with uranimn beta emitting daughters.
6 At the Parks Facility liquids, there are two dominant soerces of beta activity Cs-137 and Pu-241. They have the same release limit. Pu 241 activity is inferred based upon the alpha activity. The FFTF ratio of Pu-241 beta to TRU alpha of 6.69 was used.
