Dear Ms. Katz and Mr. Gunter:

This letter provides an update of your Petition dated November 25,1996, as amended December 23,1996, submitted on behalf of the Citizens Awareness Network and the Nuclear information and Resource Service pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Raoulations.

Section 2.206. The Petition was submitted to the Commissioners of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and to the NRC Executive Director for Operations. The Petition requested that the NRC take action regarding the nuclear facilities that Northeast Utilities (licensee) operates in Connecticut. ,

' A Partial Director's Decision (DD 97-21) was provided to you by letter dated September 12,1997, and a followup correction letter was sent on October 20,1997. As we noted in the partial decision and in subsequent updates, a portion of Request 3 is deferred because NRC investigations are ongoing relating to any possible wrongdoing by the licensee. A final director's decision will be provided when the NRC completes its investigations.

I will continue to periodically update you on the status of your Petition, if you have any questions, please call me at (301) 415-1408.

Sincerely, Original signed by:
