McGuire Nuc1 car Statite. Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-369 and 50-370 Supplemental Response to NRC Generic Letter 89-13. Service Water System Problems Affecting Safety-Related Equipment By 1ctter dated July 18, 1989, the NRC staff requested holders of operating licenses to supply information about their respective service water systems to assure the NRC of compliance with the requirements referenced in Generic Letter 89-13, and to confirm that the safety functions of their respective service water systems are being met. By letter dated January 26, 1990, we provided our initial response t.o the Generic Letter.
Action I of Generic Letter 89-13 required holders of operating licenses to confirm that flushing and flow testing has been established.
In our initial response we committed to provide the staff with a schedule for completion of the modifications required to impicment flushing of infrequently used cooling loops. This schedule is as follows:
Assured Make-up to:
Unit 1 Unit 2 Component Cooling Fall 1992*
Spring 1993*
Auxiliary Feedwater Fall 1992*
Spring 1993*
Diesel Generator Engine Cooling Fall 1992*
Spring 1993*
Spent Fuel Pool Cooling 1st Quarter 1992** 1st Quarter 1992**
These modifications will be installed during the EOC8 refueling outages.
These modifications will be installed while the units are on-line.
Action I of Generic Letter 89-13 also required holders of operating licenses to complete initial activities in the development and impicmentation of an intake structure inspection program, and biocide addition program prior to start-up following the first refueling outage beginning nine months or more after the date of the letter, and provide NRC confirmation of such completion, the intake structure inspection program has been developed.
Procedures for inspection have been implemented and the intake structures have been sa npled and analyzed for macrofouling organisms, (clams, mussels, et al..).
Tiver inspections of the intake structures are being planned for l
the upcomin'; winter.
As stated in our initial response, our blocide program is pending :.he review of results from a pilot program at our Catawba plant.

i-Action III of Generic Letter 89-13 also required holders of operating licenses to provide the NRC confirmation that a piping inspection and repair program has been established beforo plant start-up from the first refueling outage beginning after April 18, 1990. The McGuire piping inspection and repair program was initiated on March 21, 1989, and initial inspections were conducted in January 1990.
Action IV of. Generic Letter 89-13 also required holders of operating licenses.to provide the NRC confirmation that the required single failure review had been completed. This review has been completed for McGuire as of October 10, 1990. However, the need to review temperature rise of the Component Cooling system during a failure of a reactor coolant pump thermal barrier isolation valve was identified.
A review of this issue is being conducted.
In our response dated January 26, 1990 to Generic Letter 89-13 Action II, we referenced a Service Water Program Manual that would be used to document our service water program.
This manual is complete and was issued November 12, 1990.
