PERSONNEL EXPOSURE IN EXCESS OF 5 REMS A contractor employee working at the Brunswick site may have received a radiation dose The maximum osureexp.ofallowed 5.05 rems during by NRC the fourthiscalendar regulations 3 rems per quarter of 1978.

The 5.05 rem value is based on results of personnel monitoring badges worn by the employee. Direct-reeding pocket dosimeters, which were also l

, l worn by the employee, indicate 2.3 rems. The employee was working on '

decontamination of the radioactive waste system. Exposures for other N contractor employees doing similar work were all less than 2.5 rems as determined by personnel monitoring badges. The licensee is investi-j gating the discrepancy between badge and dosimeter readings.

l IE inspectors will followup during the week of December 4. I Media interest is not expected. A news release is not pianned by the '

licensee or the NRC. An NRC news release will be reconsidered following IE inspection of this matter. The State of North Carolina has been notified.

Region II (Atlanta) received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 3:10 p.m. on November 30. This information is current as of 12:30 p.m. on December 1,1978.
