SUBJECT:

ULTRASONIC INDICATION OF POSSIBLE AN0MALY ON ONE JET PUMP RISER SAFE-END WELD Ultrasonic (UT) examination of one jet pump riser safe-end September 27 disclosed an indication of a possible anomaly.

Subsequent radiographic ~

examination did not correlate indications found by ultrasonic examination.

This weld is at the point where the jet pump riser penetrates the reactor m

vessel.

The examination was conducted as a result of cracks found in similar safe-ends at the Duane Arnold facility.' The licen:;ee has concluded

.as a result of analysis done to date that this indication.is not significant; I

a however review by both the licensee and NRC is continuing.

Unit No. 1 l

startup on September 29, is planned.

Earlier UT examinations of nozzle safe-ends on Unit 2 revealed no significant indications and Unit 2 has returned to operation.

Media interest is not expected. A press release is not planned by the I

licensee nor NRC.

The State of North Carolina has been notified.
