Dear Mr. Grier:

Reference 1. Letter D11074 from S. E. Scace to J. Grier dated May 6,1997.

Reference 2 Letter C07639 from M. Harder to S. E. Scace dated August 13,1997.

Millstone Station Notification of Unit 2 Discharoe Aerated Waste Monitorino Tank Northeast Nuclear Energy Company (NNECO) has previously discussed with you protocols for the reporting and processing of certain wastewater containing small amounts of hydrazine until no hydrazine above detection limits is observed (Refe(ences 1). As requested by the Department, NNECO hereby submits the following written notification of such discharges for the month of August. As discussed with you earlier this month, NNECO is no longer required to make weekly oral notifications to the Department so long as a written report is submitted by the end of each month.

On August 11,1997, consistent with the manner in which similar wastewater has been previously handled (Reference 1), 3,020 gallons of wastewaters from the Aerated Waste Monitoring Tank were processed through the demineralizers and filters associated with DSN 0018-2 prior to discharge. These wastewaters met alllimits associated with DSN 0018-2.

. Further, no hydrazine above detectable limits (<3.2 ppb) using spectrophotometry was found.

0 Initially, pre processing analysis indicated no hydrazine above detectable limits (<350 ppb) using the titration method.

3 As outlined in a letter from M. Harder to S. E. Scace dated August 13,1997 (Reference 2) and as subsequently discussed with the Department, NNECO is no longer required to notify the

[' h Department of discharges from DSN 001B-2 and 0018-3 when the hydrazine concentration prior to processing is less than detectable using the titration method (<350 ppb). NNECO will continue to notify the Department by letter on a monthly basis when the hydrazine concentration prior to processing is greater than 350 ppb.
