Sealed Source DESCRIPTION:

The source consists of cesium-137 microspheres silver soldered within a monel capsule. This capsule is enclosed in a second capsule of the same material and sealed with a silver braze, or HELI-ARC weld.

Source identification is engraved on end of capsule plug. Overall capsule dimensions are 1.07" x 0.375" diameter.

The 3M Model 4F6H sealed source is a new design which has been modified from the former 3M Model 4F68.

LABELING:

The 3M Model 4F6H sealed source is labeled with the isotope, manufacturers logo, unique serial number and date of assay, l

DIAGRAM:

See attachment 1.

CONDITIONS OF NORMAL USE:

The 3M Model 4F6H source will primarily be used for general well logging applications.

PROTOTYPE. TESTING:

The manufacturer states that in no case did the sources tested release more than 0.005 microcurie of activity after being subjected to the conditions below:

1.) TESTS a

1000*C for 30 minutes.

b 800*C for 30 minutes followed by a quench in tap water.

c Bending source body into the arc of a 3" diameter circle.

d Immersion in molten aluminum at 700*C for 30 minutes, e

15 two foot-pound impacts directly on the tube area with an impact hammer having a 1" diameter hemispherical head.

f)

Vibrating loose inside an aluminum container at 280 cycles per minute of 11" amplitude for 4 hours4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
.

g)

Vibrating while rigidly mounted, at 280 cycles per minute of 11" amplitude for 144 hours0.00167 days
0.04 hours
2.380952e-4 weeks
5.4792e-5 months
.

h)

Abraided with 100 two inch strokes in one minute under 10 lbs.

pressure on 120 grade 3 Mite Wet-or-Dry brand sandpaper.

1)

Soak tested in 100 ml of water, 0.01N HC1, or 1% Versene at 50*C for 16 hours1.851852e-4 days
0.00444 hours
2.645503e-5 weeks
6.088e-6 months
.

j)

Pressure test to 25000 pounds per square inch.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Dose rates for the source can be calculated by using the gamma constant for cesium-137 of 0.33 R per hour at one meter per curie. Thus, a 5 r 'ie source would yield about 1.65 R per hour at one meter, j

QUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

All production units are subjected to the following tests during or after j

fabrication.

(Cont.):

a)

Bubble test for leaks, using water 90 C.

Both inner and outer capsules.

b)

Drop test subjecting source to 10g deceleration.

c)

Leak test by water pressurization to 25000 psi for four 15 minute I

cycles.

Weights before and after tests must agree to 4 mg.

d)

Heating to 450"F for 30 minutes.

e)

Wipe tests.

LIMITATIONS AND OTHER. CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The 3M sealed source Model 4F6H shall be distributed only to persons specifically licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or an Agreement State.

The sealed source shall be leak tested at six (6) month intervals

~

using techniques capable a detecting 0.005 microcurie of removable contamination.

Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.

This registration sheet and the information contained within the references shall not be changed without the written consent of the I

Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

SAFETY ANALYSIS

SUMMARY

The source Model 4F6H is a modified replacement for the Model 4F6B. The Model 4F6D was approved for use in 1961.

)

Based on our review of the informatita listed below, we conclude that the 3M Model 4F6H sealed source designs are not acceptable for licensing as well-logging sources.

Because the source does not meet the dispersible criterion in 10 CFR Part 39, 3M no longer manufactures the source,
