i Comissiceer Doub SAFETY EVALUATION OF THk GE MARK III CONTAINMENT j
I As I told the Commission several weeks ago, the staff has completed its review of the General Electric Mark III containment design con-capt.. We have concluded that the Mark III containment system should be designed to meet the requirements of Safety Guides 3 and 7 (on fission product release and hydrogen evaluation in design basis accidents). The enclosed report discusses our review and conclusions.
I have emclosed also a note from R. S. Boyd, Assistant Director, BWRs, pointing out that we now have the first application (Grand Gulf) with a Mark XII containment in the final stages of the acceptance review.
We need to tall the applicant of our conclusions on Mark III, as well as on other espects of the application.
At one of our meetings with the Commaission on the Mark III contain= ant, you requested that we discuss our findings with you before we made public any staf f documents on the Mark III review. As Mr. Boyd notes, we have now reached the point where we need to make our findings on Mark III public in connection with the Grand Gulf application.
We would appreciate an early opportunity to discuss this matter with you.
