Gentlemen:

This refers to the inspection conducted by Mr. R. E. Baer of this office during

the period August 25-29, 1986, of activities authorized by NRC Operating

License NPF-47 for River Bend Station, and to th'e discussion of our findings

with you and other members of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection.

Areas examined during the inspection included portions of the radiation

protection program. Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective

examination of_ procedures _and representative records, interviews with personnel,

and observations by the inspector.

The inspection findings are documented in

the enclosed inspection report.

Within the scope of the inspection, no violations or deviations were identified.

However, we are concerned regarding the lack of effectiveness of the ALARA

program as noted in paragraph 4 of the enclosed inspection report.

As a result,

you are requested to respond, in writing, within 30 days of the date of_this

letter regarding actions that will be taken to remedy these problems.

The responses _ directed by this letter are not subject to the clearance

procedures of the Office of Management and Budget as required by the paperwork

Reduction Act of 1980, PL 96-511.

Should you have any questions concerning this inspection, we will be pleased to

discuss them with you.
