SUBJECT:
ALLEGAIIONS REGARDING RESPONSIVENESS OF NRC INSPECTORS - REGION I (SH0REHM)
Attached for your information is an Office of Inspector and Auditor (OIA)
Memorandum Report concerning allegations made by George W. HENRY that U.S.
Nuclear Regulatory Comission (NRC) inspectors at Region I were not responsive to allegations he made in regard to the Shoreham Nuclear Pcwer Plant (Shoreham).
HENRY is a fomer Quality Assurance Inspector who was employed by the LONG ISLAND LIGHTING COMPANY at Shoreham.
His allegations about the NRC inspectors appeared in a January 17, 1985, article published in the Suffolk Times newspaper.
Additionally, HENRY raised the same allegations in testimony i
ne provided to the Suffolk County Legislature.
As well a's the allegations concerning the responsiveness of Region I
-inspectors at Shoreham, our report addresses HENRY's allegation that there is

organized crime activity at Shoreham.
This allegation was aired during a recent "60 Minutes" television broadcast.

i Our inquiry into this matter developed no infomation which substantiates HENRY's allegations regarding the responsiveness of Region I inspectors.
Similarly, there was no evidence developed by this inquiry which substantiates 1

his allegations regarding organized crime activity at Shoreham.
CONCLUSION This inquiry did not substantiate HENRY's allegations regarding the responsiveness of former NRC Region I inspectors HIGGINS and SNOW.
With regard to alleged organized crime activity at Shoreham, this inquiry did not identify any NRC employees involved with Shoreham who were aware of such information prior to the "60 Minutes" television broadcast. Based on the foregoing, this inquiry is closed.
