OUN O 41997 Docket No.50-029 Mr. George Papanic, Jr.

Senior Project Engineer-Licensing Yankee Atomic Electric Company 1671 Worcester Road Framingham, Massachusetts 01701 l

Dear Mr. Papanic:

I

SUBJECT:

YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION-ULTIMATE S0IL BEARING CAPACITY 4

As part of the seismic reevaluation program for the Yankee plant, Yankee i

Atomic Electric Company concluded that the ultimate soil bearing capacity of the soils beneath the reactor support structure foundation and the vapor container was 20,000 pounds per square foot (20 KSF). Supporting information was provided in your May 5,1986, April 2,1987, and May 6,1987 submittals.

k l

Enclosed is the staff's safety evaluation of this issue.

As discussed l

therein, the staff concludes that the foundation soils beneath the reactor support structure have adequate strength to support the foundation seismic loads from the NRC site-specific earthquake.

Further, the foundation soils beneath the vapor container have adequate strength, and the footing are adequately sited and placed, to support the foundation seismic load from the earthquake. Therefore, this issue is resolved.

Sincerely.

Eileen M. McKenna, Project Manager Project Directorate I-3 Division of Reactor Projects - I/II
