ATTN:
Mr. H. D. Hukill
Vice President and Director, TMI-1
P.O. Box 480

Gentlemen:
Subject:
Inspection 50-289/86-10 SP
During the period from June 27, 1986, to August 1, 1986, members of the NRC
Region I Staff conducted routine safety inspection activities at your facility.
_
The results of these inspections are documented in the enclosed report. At the
conclusion of the inspection, Mr. R. Conte of my staff summarized the inspec-
tion findings for you and other members of your staff. No violations of NRC
requirements were identified.
.
This letter acknowledges receipt of your letter of March 14, 1986, concerning
the failure to conduct daily surveillance on a fire door. Your corrective
actions were verified during this inspection, and we have no further questions
on this matter.
Also in that letter, you objected to our statement in the NRC Inspection Report
No. 50-289/85-30 regarding a lack of thorough GPUN understanding of the effects
of Furmanite in the steam generator. Thank you for your clarification in this
regard. Our statement was based on NRC Restart Staff perceptions from meetings
~
with your staff during that inspection; and, we believe, the inspection report
statements were appropriate based on the information presented to us at the
time. Subsequently, evaluations of the Furmanite repairs were reviewed by our
inspectors and found acceptable (NRC Inspection 50-289/86-09). Accordingly, we
consider the matter resolved, but no change to the original inspection report
is warranted.
No response to this letter is required. Your cooperation with us in this
matter is appreciated.
Sincerely,
ster,'
