This letter updates information provided to you in our letter of May 11, 1987, regarding the Commission's policy on the playing of radios in the control rooms of nuclear power plants. This information was provided in response to the concerns identified by Mr. Robert J. Rohland in his letter to you of October 25, 1986 (Case No: 6314360005). Our May 11 letter indicated that the Coninission was considering a request by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local 160) at Monticello and by a group of operators at Prairie Island that adjudicatory hearings be held on the October 20, 1986 Order to Show Cause issued to Northern States Power Company for the purpose of prohibiting use of radios and other audible enter-ta'.r. ment devices in the control rooms at the Prairie Island and Monticello facilities.
On May 1,1987, while the response to your letter was being prepared, the Commission rescinded the staff's October 20, 1986 Order prohibiting the use of radios in the control rooms at the Prairie Island and Monticello facilities and dismissed any further proceedings regarding an adjudicatory hearing. In a related matter, the Commission has directed the staff to develop a Policy Statement for their consideration on the more general subject of professionalism in the control rooms of nuclear power plants.
