- 1. AUTHORITY: Sections 81 and 161(b) of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954,as amended (42 U.S.C. 2111 and 2201(b)).
- 2. PRINCIPAL PURPOSE (S): The information is evaluated by the NRC staff pursuant to the criteria set forth in 10 CFR Parts 30,32,33,34,35 and 40 to determine whether the application meets the requirements of the Atomic Energy Act of 1954, as amended, and the Commission's regulations, for the issuance of a redioactive material license or amendment thereof.
- 3. ROUTINE USES: The information may be (a) provided to State health departments for their information and use; and (b) provided to Federal, State, and local health officials and other persons in the event of incident or exposure, for their information, investigation, and protection of the public health and safety. Supplement to: Application for Renewal of SNM-159 Case Western Reserve University 5.
- a. (1) Plutonium-239
- b. (1) Sealed Pu-Be neuteon (2) Uranium-235 sources (mound)
(2) Any
- c. (1) 80 Grams (2) 70 Milligrams
- 6. Research and training, including but not limited to the following uses:
- a. One of the sealed Pu-Be neutron sources is used in a variety of nuclear physics experiments performed by senior physics majors. These experiments fall into two categories:
the study of neutron diffusion and production of short-lived isotopes by neutron irra-diation.
In the first-named application, the neutron source is suspended in the center of a large tank of water with at least 50 centimeters of water surround-ing it on all sides.
Transfer to and from the tank of water requires about five seconds and is accomp-lished by use of an aluminum rod, 126 centimeters in length attached to the source. This transfer is always done in the presence of a faculty member.
In the second application, the source remains in its storage container.
Samples are inserted into the container through ports in the side.
- b. Four other sealed Pu-Be neutron sources are stored and are currently not being used, but could be used in the future for other research and/or training pur-poses.
- c. Approximately 35 milligrama of enriched uranium is contained in a nitric acid solution and is currently stored in Room 417 of our Smith Building. The mat-erial is used as a tracer for radiometric work in geochronology.
- 7. The Radiation Safety Officer will continue to be Thomas A. Bozich.
- 8. The material will be used under the direct supervision and control of personnel who have been certified as qualified by the University Radiation Safety Committee.
Persons authorized to use the material at present include selected certified faculty members in the depart-ments of Physics and Earth Sciences.
The Radiation Protection Off*cer (R.P.O.) for the Univ'ersity's Source, Special Nuclear Material and Broad Byproduct Materials licenses will continue to be Thomas A. Bozich.

Case Western Reserve University 9.
- a. A three foot long stainless steel, threaded handling rod is available where source M-222 is used, while another identical rod is available where the other four sources are stored. Another 126 centimeter rod is also available for source M-222.
- b. When not in the water tank, source M-222 is stored in a commercially manufactured drum containing 6.28 cubic feet of paraffin. The drum is 24" in diameter and 24" high made of 18 gauge steel. There are five access ports, one on the top for inserting or removing the source, and four on the side for inserting materials for irradiation. These ports are normally plugged with solic acrylic cylinders.
The storage drum was manufactured by Atomic Laboratories, Inc., 3100 Crow Canyon Road, San Ramon, CA and is designated by them as a " Neutron Beam Irradiation Facility", Catalog no. 71864. The neutron source container is kept in a locked' room except during laboratory periods.
- c. Radiation detection instruments available and used by source users and/or the R.P.O. follows:

B Each user and the Radiation Protection Officer (R.P.O.)
is responsible for insuring that their respective in-struments are calibrated once per year by Victoreen Inst.
Co., Cleveland, Ohio. An alternate is through use of the calibration standard maintained by the Division of Radiation Physics, Department of Radiology, CWRU, with a secondary standard calibrated against primary stand-l ards at N.B.S.
Proper operation will be confirmed j
during the year through use of check sources by the i
user. During routine surveys by the R.P.O. or his representative, the user's instruments will also be spot checked by comparison to determine if calibration is needed.
