This letter is'in response to your communication to me on. November 21, 1986, i requesting information about irradiation of gem stones in research reactors in the United States.. In answer to your first question,7we at NRC have no ..

specific information, but it is believed that none of the licensed reactor facilities are continuing to irradiate gem stone' materials. In the meantime, NRC is developing a policy that is expected to.be consistent with both our regulations and prudent practice. We have been in comunication with representatives of the international community, and intend to continue to coordinate our on-going considerations with them.- Enclosure 1 is a copy of a generic letter sent to all of our licensees as interim guidance, and Enclosure 2 is a brief set of informal notes provided to licensees at'a recent meeting at which the topic of distribution of irradiated materials was discussed. .
