20422 Gentlemen:

(

Enclosed please find anendment 05 to License No. SNM-1605.

In his August 26, 1983 letter to us Dr. Jane.s Snith of the Veterans Administration Central Office sent us copies of VA Circular 10-83-66 dated April 15,1983 and Supplement No. I to VA Circular 10-83-66 dated August 16, 1983. We were pleased to receive copies of these documents.

Your Radiation Safety Officer, Mr. Bowman, called us on August 29, 1983, inforned us that your institution had received a fledtronic flodel 9000 unit fran the VA Hospital at Asheville, North Carolina, and asked what needed to be done with regard to your license. After discussing this natter with other NRC staff nenbers, Dr. Smith and Mr. Bowman, we decided that it would be appropriate to anend your license to authorize your possession of two units (nanufactured by any of the four nanufacturers of nuclear units) that you night receive fron VA Hospitals such as Asheville that failed to note the August 16, 1983 revision of VA Circular'10-83-66.

We would anticipate that you should receive few, if any, units under the authorization granted by Anendment 05 to your license. Dr. James Snith has pronised to contact the VA Hospital at Asheville to remind the appropriate staff of the issuance of Supplenent 1 to VA Circular 10-83-66 and to tell them that nuclear units nust be returned directly to the nanufacturer in accordance with DOT requirenents.

If you receive additional nuclear units from other VA Medical Centers, you should notify these VA idedical Centers of the proper nethod for handling nuclear units.
