Compiling an inventory of Environmental (Climate and Water) Data from Ohio for the National Weather Service ke are serving as the agent fo'r the National Environmental Data Referral Service (SEDRES),' a civision of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),
to gatner information abcut (but not the data themselves) environmental data that have been, or are being collected in Ohio. This letter specifical1y is to inquire as to wnether you or your business or agency, makes routine weather observations, or whetner you knOw of someone, or other agency who does.
If the latter, would you please either forward this letter to her/him, or send us their name so that we may contact them directly.
Specifically, we want to identify the existence,
- location, chacteristics and availability of neather, climate and other environmental data from Ohio, data that nave been acquired for several years, and with regularity.
Descriptive information concerning the observations will be placed into a centralized computer bank in Wash-ington (soecifically located in the NE0RES office) to which you, other individuals, companies anc other private and public agencies may inquire as to the existence of, an$ the availability of such data. NE0RES will not collect the actual data tnem-s+1ves, but only a description of the data, e.g., wnich parameters were/are being measured, location of the site (s), period of observations etc. Wen this data bank eec:mes fully operational, one will be able to inauire as to the availability of tem-perature or precipitation data from a certain location and for a specific time cer9d, merely by phoning NE0RES from a terminal eQuipp d with a modem.
I write to you to inquire whether you make such observations yourself. or anetner you know of others who routinely have, or are making weather observations,

who we may contact for more information.
If you have such information, or if you knew of someone who does, we request that the attached form be completed and returned to us. By the way, there is no need to give the names or addresses of psople or wentner stations who take observations for the National Weather Service, as ne already have that information. We will supply the information that you supply on the enclosed form to NEDRES, who will place it in their referral service data bank, from which inquiries may be made.
Please understand that if and when inquiries for data are received, the holder of the data may permit or refuse the request, or permit a partial fulfillment of the request; and may change for the service (these choices will be made by the holder of the d3t3). Will you please return the Completed forms to me by 15 November 1986.
If you know of others whom I might Contact, please list their names and addresses on the forms as well. Thank you very much for your consideration.
