INSPECTION RELIEF REQUEST FOR CODE CATEGORY B-J j
WELDS FOR HADDAM NECK POWER PLANT i
By letter dated September 16, 1986, Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Company requested relief from certain Code Category B-J weld inservice inspection requirements which had been determined to be impractical to perform at the Haddam Neck Plant during the second ten-year inspection interval. The staff has reviewed your request and concluded that insufficient information is available to determine whether relief is justified. The staff requests the following additional information:
(1) If the Section XI Code-required examination could not be performed because of a limitation or obstruction, provide a detailed written description of the limitation or obstruction and/or drawings or sketches showing the specific limitation or obstruction for each weld (or a group of similar welds) for which relief is requested.
(2) Provide an estimate of the percentage of the Code-required examina-tion that was completed on each weld for which relief is requested.
(3) For each weld for which the Code-required examination could not be performed because the weld crown was as-welded, provide justification why weld preparation is impractical.
In order for us to complete our review in a timely fashion, we request that the requested information be provided within 60 days of receipt of this letter.
