MEMORANDUM FOR: Walter R. Butler, Chief 7

FROM:
Victor Benaroya, Chief
' J-Chemical Engineering Branch Division of Engineering
SUBJECT:
ESTIMATE OF SOLID DEBRIS F0P.MATION FROM ORGANIC MATERIALS INSIDE CONTAINMENT UNDER DBA CONDITIONS FOR tlNP-2.
Attached for your evaluation, in accordance with SRP Section 6.2.2, is a summary of the estimated quantity of solid debris from unqualified paints that can potentially reach the emergency sumps under design basis pipe break accidents.
Combustible gas generation rates from radiation decomposition of organic materials under DBA conditions was not estimated since the WNP-2 containment is inerted.
For solid debris formation, we assumed that only unqualified paints form debris under DBA conditions, whereas the qualified paints, charcoal, oil, and cable insulation materials are not expected to form solid debris that can potentially reach the emergency sumps under DCA conditions.
With regards to the rate of formation and size distribution of the debris, we are unable to provide such information due to uncertainty in the chemical composition and in the quality control of the application of the unqualified paints.
We believe that unqualified paints may start l
forming debris at the start of the containment spray and that most of l
the solid debris will have been formed by the time 90% of the total radiation energy from the source term has been released inside the containment following the postulated accident.
i In letter dated fiarch 3,1982 the applicant has indicated that there are 49 pounds of organic unqualified paint (6 mil thickness) and 3,376 ft unqualified organic zine coating (3.5 mil thickness) inside containment.
The applicant has stated that the total amount of unqualified coating is insignificant in tems of an increased amount of debris which could reach the containment sump.
The results of our analysis are attached.

ENCLOSURE 1 ESTIMATED SOLID DEBRIS FORMATION INSIDE CONTAINMENT OF WNP-2 UNDER DBA CONDITIONS Solid Debris Formation Assumptions:
(1) Source term of NUREG-0588 adjusted for plant-specific parameters and effects of post-accident recirculation of sump water.
(2)
Ratio of debris volume to original volume of unqualified paints = 2.
(3) Solid debris formation completed when 90% of radiation energy is released.
Results:
Organic Coating Zinc Organic Coating film thickness - mils 6
3.5 debris density-gms/cc 1.2 - 2.1 3.7-4.6 debris volume - ft3 0.1..
2.1 Most of the debris is formed within 230 days following the initiation of the postulated accident.
