Docket flumber: 50-397 Licensing Stage: Operating License Review Responsible Branch: Licensing Branch flo. 2, DL Responsible Progran flanager:

R. Auluck Attached is the geology and seismology input for the tit;P-2 SER. This input applies to SRP Secticns 2.5.1, 2.5.2 and 2.5.3.

This SER input is of a status nature without substantive detail of the review. I!ew infomation recently released by the Department of Energy and several outstanding open issues identified by the staff may have potential significance to the site. The applicant is initiating the.

required investigation to resolve these issues. Upon receipt and review of the new infomation from the applicant in 3-6 months GSB uill issue a SSER which will evaluate in detail all the geology and seismology issues.

!!c recomend that ACDS be notified, as they pay wish to have their consultants participate in neetings and other interchanges between the staff

e WNP #2 OL-SER 2.5 Geology and Seismology The WNP #2 site is located on the Hanford Reservation within the Pasco Basin, a physiographic and tectonic subdivision of the Columbia River Basalt Plateau Tectonic Province.

The Hanford Reservation is also the Locus of the Department of Energy's Basalt Waste Isolation Project, for which a comprehensive program of geological, geophysical, and hydrologic studies of the Basin was initiated in 1977.

These studies wilL continue at least for five years after the issuance of.this Safety Evaluation Report (SER), during which time new geological and geophysical information and interpretations wilL be released periodically by DOE.

Therefore, any SER or' supplement wilL represent the staff's best judgement based on the knowledge at the time that the report is written, and updated supplements to the SER wilL be issued as data are acquired and assessed.

The staff is reviewing the site in the context of the following regulation and regulatory guides:

j (1)

Appendix A, 10 CFR Part 100, Seismic and Geologic Siting for Nuclear Power Plants; (2)

Standard Review Plan (NUREG 0800)

Sections 2.5.1, 2.5.2 and 2.5.3.

(3)

Regulatory Guide 1.60, " Design Response spectra for seismic design of nuclear power plants."

(4)

Regulatory Guide 1.70, " Standard format and content of safety analysis reports for nuclear power plants", Revision 2.
