Gentlemen:
This refers to the routine safety inspection conducted by Mr. W. B. Grant of
this office on October 20 through 23, 1986, of activities at Byron Nuclear
Power Station, Units 1 and 2, authorized by NRC Operating License No. NPF-37
and Construction Permit No. CPPR-131 and to the discussion of our findings
,
with Mr. R. Ward at the conclusion of the inspection.
The enclosed copy of our inspection report identifies areas examined during
the inspection.
Within these areas, the inspection consisted of a selective
examination of procedures and representative records, observations, and
interviews with personnel.
No violation of NRC requirements were identified during the course of this
inspection. We are concerned, however, that recent radiation occurrence
reports regarding violations of radiation protection procedures could indicate
a weakness in your radiation protection awareness program. We will review
the effectiveness of your actions to strengthen this program during a future
inspection.
We will gladly discuss any question you have concerning this inspection.
